Russell continued to travel widely after quitting full-time school and began to expand his study of Taoism. He studied shamanism with the Taos tribe in New Mexico for four years beginning in 1979. [Citation required] During this period, he also studied Hsing I and Baguazhang, two additional Taoist internal martial arts, as well as Taoist meditation and acupuncture, acupressure, moxibustion, and massage methods. In 1983, he moved to London and established and managed an acupuncture business for 17 years, as well as presenting self-help courses focused on using all of these approaches as a self-help system.
Russell directed a series of music-based events he created to increase awareness in a communal environment. These were originally known as “Drum-Offs,” since each audience member was required to bring a percussion instrument.
During this period, Russell taught infant massage with doctor Yehudi Gordon for five years. In addition, he recorded two relaxation albums with Polygram International in 1986 and 1987, titled First Orbit and Sundancer.
He is the author of sixteen books, including Barefoot Doctor’s Handbook for the Urban Warrior, A Spiritual Survival Guide, and Pure: A Path to Peace, Power, and Prosperity, as well as various spoken word CDs and DVDs such as Meditate and Tai Chi Short Form. Russell contributed a weekly piece to The Observer.

 He is also a composer and producer of mood-altering electronic music, and he performs in clubs and at festivals from 1989 to 2005, with a self-help message transmitted through music, lyrics, and audience involvement. Russell has been on both London Live radio and Channel 4’s The Big Breakfast. He created the “Barefoot Doctor” series for BBC UK Style, which aired in 2003.
From 2001 to 2003, he designed and distributed a line of scented body products named “Barefoot Doctor’s Chi/Qi” and “Barefoot Doctor’s Damn Sexy” in the UK, France, and the US.
Russell began doing a weekly radio show on Ibiza Global Radio in the summer of 2009. He also played live at Bazaar in Ibiza (Santa Gertrudis),
 and released “Jewels of Enlightenment,” a DVD, CD, and book bundle concentrating on Taoist practice and philosophy. Barefoot Doctor Global is Russell’s main website.
He hosts a weekly radio show on Glastonbury Global Radio and has taught meditation online at the School for Warriors and Barefoot Satsang websites. He co-founded the PhonicTonic record label with DJ Mark Holmes, releasing dance and meditation music that claims to cure listeners via the use of various therapeutic tones and frequencies.
Russell is a supporter of the organization Last Night a DJ Saved My Life.
Russell has been traveling the world since 2011, covering 350,000 miles while promoting his Taoist “inner technology” system through presentations, residential retreats, “conscious clubbing” events, and electronic dance ventures.
Russell has been operating a mental health pilot program under the aegis of the Pavilion Mental Health Center in Tottenham, North London, since 2012. The “Mental Health Ninja” program is intended to help persons transitioning from mental institutions back into the community by teaching them components of the Taoist internal system. Mental Health Ninja was set to be launched as part of the National Health Service in August 2014.
