I received this a few weeks ago and just finished viewing it (it’s about 5 hours on 4 DVDs), so I thought I’d post a review.
The set is essentially a compilation of Panantukan pad exercises; it’s mostly focus mitt work, and you’ll need a basic understanding of boxing technique to use it.
It nearly entirely deals with the kickboxing phase; there are few exercises that go to the ground and conduct ground punching, but the Dumog is mostly used to shift angle or level to enhance hitting.
Personally, I’d have loved to see more linked striking work (simply because that’s what I enjoy), but I see why they took this path given what they were attempting to do.
The exercises have an Inosanto JKD flavor to them; they’re mainly entry-set up-flurry-finish, and the delivery is always instruction-review-live demo.
The technique drills are mixed with “blitz” drills, which are high volume punching drills with just demonstration and directions given.
Content-wise, it’s basically what you’d anticipate based on what I’ve already said.
Kickboxing combos featuring knees, elbows, and headbutts, Waslik, Gunting, and Siko entrances, Dumog entries and footsweeps, and a slew of finger jabs, claws and rips, footstomps, and groin shots
The production quality is outstanding, Sullivan’s delivery is clear and interesting, and his students certainly have good technique.
Some of Sullivan’s moves have a distinct Muay Thai flavor in the first couple of disks, but this fades by the latter disks.
A. pdf syllabus is also included on the CDs, which is a lovely touch.
I thoroughly loved and learned from this set.
There was no fluff or questionable approaches in the drills, and the sheer number of quality knowledge is mind-boggling.
There are enough drills here to last a class two years. If you watch the entire set, the fact that the exercises are all constructed the same way might make it seem a little samey, but it didn’t detract to the point that I lost interest.
The only thing that disappointed me was the connected striking aspect, but this is an issue with every FMA set.
Individual skill sets are intended to be blended, and there’s just so much things.
You’ll most likely require DVDs on Panantukan, Sikaran, Dumog, Hubud, and Kino Mutai, followed by a more advanced set on combining them.
Who should purchase this set? Obviously, anyone who performs FMA empty hand work (as I mentioned, the variety of exercises is astounding), anyone who practices a kickboxing system and wants to study more combative type stuff, or anyone who practices a TMA striking system and wants to explore more functional training approaches.
Anyone who wants to study this stuff but doesn’t have a foundation in standup should buy a boxing fundamentals DVD or Rick Faye’s Panantukan package as well (or go to a boxing class).
I’d give this DVD set five stars and suggest it to anyone who’s interested.
