Concerning the Course
What is the beginning of the universe? What exactly is dark matter and dark energy? What is our place in the cosmos as intelligent human agents? What gives us the appearance of being intelligent cognitive agents equipped with consciousness?
Philosophers are grappling with serious issues generated by scientific discovery in both the physical and cognitive sciences. The purpose of this course is to expose you to some of the significant areas and subjects at the crossroads of philosophy and science. The course is divided into two sections:
The Physical Sciences and Philosophy
2. The Cognitive Sciences and Philosophy
Each week, we will present you to some of the most pressing scientific research topics. We will explain the science underlying each topic in a straightforward, non-technical manner, while also addressing the philosophical and conceptual issues that arise. You will learn about the following topics:
Cosmological philosophy, in which we will address concerns regarding the creation and evolution of our universe, the nature of dark energy and dark matter, and the role of anthropic reasoning in explaining our universe.
Philosophy of psychology, including the evolution of the human mind and the nature of consciousness.
Philosophy of neurosciences, in which we will investigate the nature of human cognition and the relationship between mind, machine, and environment.
