Martin E.P. Seligman, Ph.D., is the Zellerbach Family Professor of Psychology and Director of the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests include positive psychology, learned helplessness, despair, and optimism. He is the author of numerous best-selling novels, including Flourish. He earned the William James Fellow Award for fundamental science and the Cattell Award for scientific application from the American Psychological Society, as well as two Distinguished Scientific Contribution awards from the American Psychological Association. Seligman was elected President of the American Psychological Association in 1996 with the most votes cast in contemporary history. His present objective is to alter social science to focus on the positive aspects of life, such as strengths, positive emotion, healthy relationships, purpose, and human flourishing.
