To train participants for fulfilling the needs of LGBTQ+ people in their chiropractic clinics.
This 2-credit hour continuing education course will investigate healthcare inequities and LGBTQ+ patient inclusion methods. Attendees will be introduced to basic terminology related to gender identity and sexual orientation, with a focus on patient self-identity, as well as sample intake forms reflective of inclusive practices, patient history taking and interviewing strategies, current healthcare pathways and challenges for transgender/nonbinary/gender nonconforming (TG/NB/GNC) people, and clinically applicable recommendations to improve patient outcomes.
Objectives of Learning:
Create a unified language for dealing with LGBTQ+ patients.
Determine the obstacles that LGBTQ+ people face while obtaining healthcare.
Promote cultural competency via the design of internal procedures and training.
Display culturally appropriate intake processes and paperwork.
Describe the history taking and interviewing procedures for TG/NB/GNC.
Empower students to better serve the health of LGBTQ+ people.
Dr. William Foshee (he/him/his) is the current chair of the American Chiropractic Association Commission on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, as well as the chair of the Next Gen ACA Committee, which represents over 2000 ACA early career chiropractors. He graduated from Northwestern Health Sciences University, where he was named a Diversity Leadership Scholar for his dedication to the health of underprivileged populations. In addition, he was recognized a Philanthropy Fund Foundation Scholar for his leadership and commitment to the LGBTQIA community. Dr. Foshee strives to favorably affect culturally competent chiropractic care delivery and has given health equity presentations to chiropractic stakeholders in national and state organizations, university audiences, and regulatory agencies. He is presently engaged at the Medical City Dallas site of MyoCore, a multi-clinic, hospital-based chiropractic organization.
